Description

Interested researchers may contact Dr. Jennifer Stevens (v5js@mun.ca) in RIS for assistance in developing their applications.

CISE is a two-year pilot program for Atlantic Canada, modeled after and replacing the Chairs for Women in Science and Engineering (CWSE) program. The CISE pilot will “support a team of researchers in the Atlantic region who contribute to a culture of inclusion in the natural sciences and engineering fields”.

CISE will provide Chairholders with the platform to create collaborations and partnerships as well as to promote and support activities that advance EDI initiatives, enhance awareness of inequities and barriers, and improve retention of members of underrepresented groups in natural sciences and engineering.

Funding:

Maximum NSERC total funding of $305K/pa

  • $130K/pa base funding
  • Up to $70K/pa match for cash/in-kind funds from an external partner
  • $75K/pa match funds for three PDFs (conditional upon university contribution)
  • Up to $30K/pa for projects with at least one aspect that aligns with PromoScience goals (must be applied for through the CISE application)

Eligibility:

  • Teams of three researchers from at least two NSERC-eligible universities
  • At least one applicant must self-identify as a woman
  • All researchers must* hold NSERC research funding
  • At least one aspect of the proposal must be on participation/retention of women in natural sciences/engineering
  • At least one supporting organization must make a cash/in-kind contribution

* In certain exceptional cases where strong justification is provided, a researcher without an NSERC may be allowed. However, they cannot access PDF funding.

Contributions:

  • Institutions
    • At least $20K/pa for a PDF (not a requirement for application submission)
    • Letter of support outlining the $20K, plus other contributions (teaching release, space, student support, etc…)
  • External Partners
    • Cash and/or in-kind support from at least one external partner is required
    • Partner must provide a letter of support, and NSERC form 183A

Other notes

  • Chairholders are expected to contribute up to 50% of their time to CISE
  • It is expected that the Chair will be released from teaching and administration tasks in proportion to the stated percentage of time dedicated to Chair activities
  • Additional details can be found on NSERC’s CISE webpage, here.
