Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore industry seeks emissions reduction ideas

* Non-repayable funding available through the offshore component of Natural Resources
Canada’s Emissions Reduction Fund, managed by Petroleum Research NL
* Demonstration and RD&D and related science activities will be considered for funding
* Deadline for submissions of proposals is January 29, 2021

St. John’s, NL- Newfoundland and Labrador’s oil and gas industry is seeking ideas to reduce emissions
from offshore operations.

Petroleum Research Newfoundland and Labrador (PRNL) today issued a call for proposals for innovative ideas to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from oil and gas facilities operating offshore Newfoundland and Labrador. PRNL, the leading facilitator of research, technology development and innovation for Canada’s offshore, manages and funds projects on behalf of industry operators, frequently in collaboration with the federal and provincial governments.

Non-repayable funding for successful projects will come from the offshore research, development and
demonstration (RD&D) component of Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF). PRNL is delivering the offshore RD&D component of the ERF program.
“Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, growing the economy, and making our communities healthier. The Emissions Reduction Fund is helping to make our oil and gas sector more sustainable than ever, making sure our companies remain globally competitive,” said the Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources.

PRNL will consider proposals for demonstration and front end engineering and design (FEED) activities
(to a maximum of $5 million per eligible project) as well as research and development (R&D) and related science activities (to a maximum of $2 million for eligible activities). The deadline to submit proposals is January 29, 2021. More details about the program, eligibility criteria and application documents can be found at http://petroleumresearch.ca/.

“There are many innovative companies and organizations in Canada. We invite them to review the
eligibility criteria and if they feel the application of their ideas will result in reducing GHG emissions, we’re interested in hearing from them”, said Dave Finn, PRNL’s Chief Executive Officer.
To be considered for Offshore RD&D Program funding, recipients must be companies and organizations with legal entities validly incorporated or registered in Canada. Innovations can originate from anywhere globally, but the projects must be undertaken in Canada, with technology that is tested, piloted and demonstrated within Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore oil industry.

Petroleum Research Newfoundland and Labrador (PRNL) advances research and development (RD&D) and innovation projects in the offshore oil and gas industry, with a focus on health, safety and the environment. PRNL is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization whose members include
Chevron Canada Resources, Equinor Canada, ExxonMobil Canada, Husky Energy and Suncor Energy.
