Description

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) officially launched its 2025 Innovation Fund (IF) competition on June 6, 2024. Proposals are due February 4, 2025, with decisions expected in November 2025. With no predetermined distribution of funding, CFI will award up to a total of $425M (i.e., anticipated funding rate of approximately 35%), over the three competition streams:

  • Stream 1: Leading edge of exploration and knowledge generation, which is open to ALL disciplines.
  • Stream 2: Leading edge of exploration and knowledge generation in social sciences, humanities and arts (SSHA) (*To be eligible, a proposal’s primary field of research must be in SSHA), and,
  • Stream 3: Renewal and upgrade of core facilities. To be eligible, all requested infrastructure must be housed in and managed by a “core facility.*
  • * A core facility, as defined by CFI, is a facility that provides access to research services, infrastructure, expertise, and training that is generally too expensive, complex, or specialized for researchers to cost-effectively provide and sustain themselves.

For further information, please see CFI’s June 6, 2024 Innovation Fund Call for Proposals, https://www.innovation.ca/sites/default/files/2024-06/CFI-Innovation-Fund-2025-Call-Proposals.pdf.

Memorial’s 2025 CFI IF institutional envelope is $10.8M, with no predetermined distribution of the envelope between CFI’s three competition streams.

The objectives of this competition are to:

• Enable internationally competitive research and technology development through the equitable participation of expert team members,
• Enhance the capacity of institutions to conduct research or technology development program over the useful life of the infrastructure,
• Generate benefits for Canadians.
