The program guidelines (https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/corporate/about-health-canada/funding/addressing-racism-discrimination-canada-health-systems-program.html) note that there can only be one application submitted per eligible organization. Given there is an institutional quota, Memorial University must have a mechanism through which to review planned projects in order to submit an application by the Sponsor deadline of May 15th.
If you wish to submit an application to this program please submit a 3-page project summary plus a budget to RIS by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 2nd through the general office email address of rgcs@mun.ca.
Purpose
Health Canada’s Addressing Racism and Discrimination in Canada’s Health Systems Program (the Program) was established to foster health systems free from racism and discrimination. Further, the Program advances Health Canada’s overall mandate to help everyone in Canada maintain and improve their health by striving to ensure high quality health services are efficient and accessible, and by reducing health inequities.
The Program provides contribution funding for time-limited projects that address current and emerging priorities relating to addressing systemic racism and discrimination in Canada’s health systems in a way that is informed by the lived experiences of Indigenous, racialized and marginalized communities.
Objectives
The objectives of these investments are to result in:
- Individuals living in Canada having access to appropriate, effective, and culturally sensitive health services; and,
- Improving the health of racialized and marginalized populations .
To achieve its objectives, the Program will make investments through two distinct streams of funding:
- Project stream: To improve the safety, accessibility, equity, quality, sustainability, and accountability of Canada’s health systems, investments will be made in community-supported systems-level projects that address racism and discrimination perpetrated against racialized and/or marginalized populations.
- Engagement stream: To maintain strong and effective publicly funded health systems, investments will be made to build capacity within racialized and/or marginalized communities and organizations that serve racialized and/or marginalized populations to enable them to meaningfully engage on their health priorities.
Expected Outcomes
All projects funded under the Program must contribute to and align with the Program’s stated outcomes:
- Health system partners have increased capacity to create culturally safe and inclusive health services for racialized and marginalized communities.
- Health system partners apply knowledge to create culturally safe and inclusive health services for racialized and marginalized communities.
- Health system partners provide inclusive and culturally safe services to racialized and marginalized populations
The Program advances the Government of Canada’s commitment to support culturally-appropriate, safe, equitable, and inclusive health services, as well as its pledge to address systemic racism in a way that is informed by the lived experiences of Indigenous Peoples and racialized communities. Furthermore, the Program was announced as a part of the Federal Pathway – the federal government’s contribution to the National Action Plan to End Violence Against Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA People, and supports broader federal efforts including Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy and Canada’s Strategy to Prevent and Address Gender-Based Violence.
