Description
The Canadian Space Agency recently launched the Aqualunar Challenge in collaboration with Impact Canada, the United Kingdom Space Agency (UKSA) and Challenge Works. The Aqualunar Challenge is a challenge prize with a goal of creating innovative water purification technologies that could support more ambitious space missions. With humankind returning to the Moon later this decade, purifying the water-ice that exists in lunar regolith is critical to supporting a longer term presence on the lunar surface. Using lunar water – as drinking water, to grow food, to create oxygen and to split into hydrogen and oxygen for rocket fuel – is a key enabler for supporting future deep space exploration.
The Aqualunar Challenge is calling on innovators to create innovative technologies, for use on the Moon, to remove contaminants found in lunar water.
Between now and April 8, 2024, applications are open for teams to submit their bold and brilliant ideas and proposals outlining how they meet the criteria of the Challenge, which you can find here. The Challenge will contain 3 Stages. In Stage 1, up to 8 of the most promising solutions will be selected to receive a $22,500 CAD grant. In Stage 2, up to 4 finalists will receive a $105,000 CAD grant. In Stage 3, one Grand Prize Winner will be selected to receive a $400,000 CAD grant. Throughout the Challenge, there will also be non-financial support to help teams rapidly develop their solutions.
