The aim of this Catalyst Grant is to provide seed money to support research activities related to Indigenous approaches to wellness which represent the first steps towards the pursuit of more comprehensive funding opportunities (e.g., operating grants). This funding opportunity will fund researchers who, in collaboration with the Indigenous community, will develop, evaluate, and build on existing tools and methods to better incorporate Indigenous concepts of wellness in health research designs.

Research Areas

To be considered relevant to this funding opportunity, the projects must consider the development and/or implementation of interventions such as land-based healing approaches that result in improved wellness for First Nations, Inuit or Métis Peoples. IAPH will provide funding for applications that propose projects and activities targeting First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples and that take place in Canada.

In addition to IAPH’s mandatory relevant research areas described above:

  • CIHR-IA will provide funding for applications to support the place/inclusion of elders in Indigenous society and the trajectory of aging in Indigenous people.
  • CIHR-IMHA will provide funding for applications to support ethical and impactful research to enhance active living, mobility and oral health, and to address the wide range of conditions related to bones, joints, muscles, connective tissue, skin and teeth.
  • CIHR- ICRH will provide funding for applications to support the prevention, treatment, support systems, or palliation of conditions associated with the heart, lung, brain (stroke), blood, blood vessels, critical and intensive care, or sleep.

Examples of activities that may be conducted under this Funding Opportunity (but are not restricted to) are:

  • Execution of feasibility studies or potentially scalable or adaptable projects to generate preliminary data or proof of concept related to Indigenous wellness; and/or
  • Development, revival, and/or validation of new inventions, tools, methodologies, protocols, theoretical models, or frameworks related to Indigenous wellness

Funds Available

CIHR and partner(s) financial contributions for this initiative are subject to availability of funds. Should CIHR or partner(s) funding levels not be available or are decreased due to unforeseen circumstances, CIHR and partner(s) reserve the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to grants received as a result of this funding opportunity.

  • The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $2,100,000, enough to fund approximately 14 grants. This amount may increase if additional funding partners participate. The maximum amount per grant is $150,000 for one year.
  • Of this $2,100,000:
    • $300,000 is available to fund applications relevant to CIHR-IA as specified in the relevant research areas listed above in the Research Areas section.
    • $300,000 is available to fund applications relevant to CIHR-IMHA as specified in the relevant research areas listed above in the Research Areas section.
    • $300,000 is available to fund applications relevant to the CIHR-ICRH as specified in the relevant research areas listed above in the Research Areas section.
    • $1,200,000 is available to fund applications relevant to CIHR-IAPH as specified in the relevant research areas listed above in the Research Areas section.
