BY INVITATION ONLY

The Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) is a national coalition of federal, provincial and territorial partners (patients and informal caregivers, provincial health authorities, academic health centres, charities, philanthropic organizations, private sector, etc.) dedicated to the integration of research into care.

Patient-oriented research refers to a continuum of research that engages patients as partners, focuses on patient-identified priorities and improves patient outcomes. This research, conducted by multidisciplinary teams in partnership with relevant stakeholders, aims to apply the knowledge generated to improve healthcare systems and practices.

The aim of this Catalyst Grant program is to provide seed money to support patient-oriented research activities which represent a step towards the pursuit of more comprehensive applications to funding opportunities (e.g., Operating Grants).

Applicants are encouraged to increase the inclusion and advancement of underrepresented groups in the sciences as one means to enhance excellence in research and training. As such, applicants are to describe any planned approaches to promote an inclusive research and work environment, such as efforts to increase participation from underrepresented groups, and any considerations of equity, diversity and inclusion in the recruitment practices and training/mentorship activities. Applicants are encouraged to complete the CIHR Unconscious Bias Learning Module.

Examples of activities that might be conducted under this request for applications include (but are not restricted to):

Planning and executing pilot projects or feasibility studies to generate proof of concept and/or preliminary data;

Development and/or validation of new tools, methodologies, protocols, theoretical models or frameworks.

These activities must align with the guiding principles and considerations of the SPOR Patient Engagement Framework and SPOR Capacity Development Framework.

Funds Available

CIHR and partner(s) financial contributions for this initiative are subject to availability of funds. Should CIHR or partner(s) funding levels not be available or are decreased due to unforeseen circumstances, CIHR and partner(s) reserve the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to grants received as a result of this funding opportunity.

  • The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $3,500,000, enough to fund approximately thirty-five (35) grants. The maximum amount per grant is $100,000 per year, for up to one year. This funding opportunity does not require 1:1 matching of CIHR funds; however, applicants may come forward with letters of support from partners confirming cash or in-kind contributions to support the activities of the proposal.
