Deadlines

Academic Unit: Inquire with Unit

Memorial Deadline: Thursday 27th, April 2017

External Deadline: Tuesday 2nd, May 2017

Description

Heart disease and stroke kill more Canadians each year than any other illness. A major risk factor for heart disease and stroke is hypertension, which contributes to half of all deaths caused by these conditions. It is estimated that 7.5 million Canadians have hypertension. Canada is taking a leadership role in combatting hypertension and has the world’s highest reported national rates of hypertension awareness, treatment and control.

Contributing to building Canada’s leadership in hypertension are CIHR and H&S, which have a longstanding partnership to support a Chair in Hypertension Prevention and Control. As funding for the current Chair comes to an end, CIHR and H&S have renewed their commitment to partner on a Chair in Hypertension Prevention and Control. In addition, HTC has joined as an official partner on the 2017 launch of the Chair due to the success achieved by past Chairs.

The Chair has focused on improving awareness, prevention and control of hypertension with a strong mandate in Knowledge Transfer and Exchange (KTE) and Knowledge Translation (KT). The partners want to continue to address KTE, KT and Knowledge Gaps (KG) in this critical area to achieve ambitious targets for hypertension in Canada by further reducing the number of individuals unaware of their condition below 17% and improving hypertension control rates above 65%. The current Chair funding opportunity is seeking to support a senior investigator capable of focusing on solutions that go beyond the individual to that of the community, policy and health system.

Mandate

The mandate of the Chair is to optimize the generation and application of knowledge to focus on improving the awareness, prevention and control of hypertension. The successful candidate will be expected to achieve this by interaction and engagement with international partners, federal and provincial health care agencies, food industry, health care providers, the community at large, and others. The Chair will interact with and enhance current Canadian programs, identify gaps in hypertension prevention and control, and develop new policies, programs and interventions as necessary.

Implementation and outcomes research to evaluate hypertension programs is a priority for the Chair as are clear measurable objectives, indicators and benchmarks related to fulfilling the mandate.
