CIHR HostSeq Fellowship

Well-being, Health and Biomedical Discovery

Deadlines

Academic Unit: inquire with unit

Memorial Deadline: Friday 8th, July 2022

External Deadline: Thursday 14th, July 2022

Description

The CGEn HostSeq/CIHR Joint Postdoctoral Fellowship Program will support highly-qualified postdoctoral trainees whose research involves the study of human genetics and the challenges of COVID-19 disease in Canada using bioinformatic approaches. Successful applicants to the Fellowship Program must apply for access to and use CGEn’s host genome sequencing (HostSeq) Databank to support their postdoctoral research project.

This funding opportunity will support applications that focus on the role of the human genome in the manifestation of COVID-19 disease through bioinformatic analyses of data from the HostSeq Databank. Areas relevant for this funding opportunity include (but are not limited to):

  • furthering the understanding and characterization of the role human genetics plays in COVID-19 disease progression and outcomes;
  • uncovering potential biomarkers for COVID-19 risk prediction;
  • providing foundational understanding for the development of potential precision therapies;
  • producing tools, methods and results that will lead to enhanced pandemic preparedness;
  • developing bioinformatic methodologies that utilize cutting edge technologies (e.g. artificial intelligence) to query and analyze genomic databases; etc.

At the conclusion of the Postdoctoral Fellows’ tenure, a culminating event will be held by CIHR-IG and CGEn where fellows will have the opportunity to present the aims, methods and outcomes related to their research project and explore opportunities for collaboration with other research groups.

It is expected that research findings and other outputs will be made available, freely, and openly, to the scientific community to accelerate research translation and benefits. Projects funded through this funding opportunity must share data and resources in a timely fashion. Publication in open access journals is encouraged (with any relevant datasets to be released and shared no later than the original publication date) and projects must adhere to the HostSeq Publication & Acknowledgement Policy. Any source codes for computer programs should be made available to others using license agreements that adhere to open-source principles.

It is expected that applicants integrate sex and gender perspectives into their research to promote rigorous science that has the potential to expand our understanding of health determinants for all people. As such, applicants are required to indicate how they will account for sex (biological factor) and gender (socio-cultural factor) in the research design, methods, analysis and interpretation, and dissemination of findings. For more information and resources, please see the Sex, Gender and Health Research page on the CIHR website.

Supported by the Canadian COVID-19 Genomics Network (CanCOGeN), the HostSeq Databank is providing a resource that will enable the Canadian research community to better characterize the role of human genetics in COVID-19 disease, deliver new biomarkers for risk prediction, and implement appropriate healthcare strategies, including potential precision therapies. The HostSeq Databank will contain genomic sequences and clinical data from 10,000 individuals affected by COVID-19, recruited through studies from across Canada. Additional details about HostSeq clinical data can be found on CGEn’s website.
