Description

Demographic shifts toward an aging population, rapid urbanization, climate change, the growing burden of chronic diseases, and widening health inequities within and between countries are but a few of the complex problems facing Canada and other nations. To tackle these problems, we need relevant, high quality and timely population and public health evidence. These complex problems often require innovative solutions that increasingly leverage new data sources, technology and methodologies and require the building of cross-sectoral partnerships. Population and public health (PPH) research focuses on the interactions between the biological, social, cultural, and environmental factors that determine health, disease and disability at a population level. It involves generating knowledge about responses that will ultimately change the daily living and working conditions to improve people’s lives now and in the future. Population and public health tackles the causes of the causes – the fundamental structures of social hierarchy and the socially determined conditions these structures create in which people grow, live, work and age.

The CIHR-IPPH Trailblazer Award in Population and Public Health Research is a career achievement award that recognizes exceptional contributions in the area of population and public health research. Applicants must have made substantial impacts on the field of population health and its use in policy and/or practice in Canada and/or internationally. The award also recognizes the leadership, mentorship, and innovative contributions of the recipients. Up to three awards will be given, for exceptional researchers at different career stages.

Additional program guidelines can be found on CIHR’s website.
