Description

Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) is about ensuring that the right patient receives the right intervention at the right time.

Patient-oriented research refers to a continuum of research that engages patients as partners, focusses on patient-identified priorities and improves patient outcomes. This research, conducted by multidisciplinary teams in partnership with relevant stakeholders, aims to apply the knowledge generated to improve healthcare systems and practices.

The objective of SPOR is to foster evidence-informed health care by bringing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to the point of care, so as to ensure greater quality, accountability, and accessibility of care.

Since its launch in 2011, SPOR has implemented five key elements of the Strategy: Support for People and Patient-Oriented Research and Trials (SUPPORT) Units; SPOR Networks; Improving the Clinical Trial Landscape; Developing Capacity and; Patient Engagement. This work has been realized through a coalition of federal, provincial and territorial partners all dedicated to the integration of research into care.

Through consultation with the provinces and territories, it was felt that a concerted, well-resourced, collective approach is needed in Canada to ensure that evidence-informed practice guidelines are rigorously developed and effectively implemented so as to improve quality of care and health outcomes.

Through this funding opportunity, SPOR will support the national coordination and project management in support of systematic reviews and guidelines development including the training and capacity development necessary to develop guidelines.

In keeping with the principles of SPOR, successful applicants will be required to:

  • engage patients, clinicians and policy makers in priority setting for its projects;
  • ensure sufficient capacity and develop a mechanism to respond to requests from provincial/territorial ministries of health in a timely fashion;
  • ensure a national scope, including the ability to provide services in both official languages, i.e., English and French;
  • have international connections;
  • produce patient-friendly products; and
  • create a mechanism to interact with and support other SPOR-funded entities, such as SUPPORT Units and Networks.

In addition, applicants are expected to engage with the SPOR SUPPORT Units as early as possible in the development stage of their proposal as the work of the successful applicants must compliment and not duplicate the work of SUPPORT Units. The successful applicants will be required to maintain these connections throughout their funding lifecycle and within the budget allocated.
