Description

This funding opportunity is jointly supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Its aim is to promote the development of Canadian-Chinese scientific co-operation between universities, hospitals, research institutes and affiliated research organizations in Canada and China by supporting collaborative research teams working on implementation research projects in the field of mental health.

This funding opportunity is also part of the fourth joint research program of the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD). Established in 2009, the GACD is a globally coordinated effort of thirteen health research funding agencies which supports implementation research on the prevention and management of chronic non-communicable diseases.

The GACD mental health program focuses on implementation research on the full range of child, adolescent and adult age onset mental disorders (as defined by the Mental and behavioural disorders (FOO-F99) of WHO’s International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (lCD-l 0) including, but not limited to, dementia, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, alcohol- and drug-use disorders, etc., in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) (as defined by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Development Assistance Committee) and/or in vulnerable populations in high-income countries (HIC). For the latter, applicants must demonstrate that the proposed population under investigation in HIC is considered as vulnerable.

International Linkages

In order to facilitate the establishment of international, collaborative teams, CIHR and NSFC are providing the following tools:

Application Development Workshop: An application development workshop will be hosted in Beijing, China, February 21-23, 2017. The purpose of the workshop is to provide an opportunity for the relevant research communities in Canada and China to network and to encourage the strong formation of teams and applications. Travel awards are available to support Canadian participation in the workshop.

Linking Tool: CIHR is providing a linking tool to the research community for this funding opportunity. This linking tool provides a web space for researchers to share contact information, areas of research interest, and expertise that may help form a collaborative team. Funds Available

CIHR and partner(s) financial contributions for this initiative are subject to availability of funds. Should CIHR or partner(s) funding levels not be available or are decreased due to unforeseen circumstances, CIHR and partner(s) reserve the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to grants received as a result of this funding opportunity.

  • The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $7,525,000 CDN from CIHR and 35 million RMB from NSFC, enough to fund approximately 7 team grants.
  • For Canada-based researchers, the maximum amount per grant is $215,000 per year for up to five years.
  • For China-based researchers, the maximum amount per grant is 1 million RMB per year for up to five years.
