About the program
This pilot program aims to support the establishment of mutually beneficial relationships between Indigenous communities and academics that will lead to the co-design of northern, biodiversity-focused research projects.
How does it work?
- – Community partners will share their research interests with researchers through webinars and written summaries.
- – Researchers will apply to the Foundation for funding to support travel to partner communities for themselves and their graduate students. Travel should take place in the summer or fall of 2024.
- – Researchers will develop biodiversity-focused projects in direct cooperation with community partners.
What are the research priorities?
Currently, the Weston Family Foundation is partnering with the Cree First Nation of Waswanipi and the Cree Nation of Chisasibi in Northern Quebec to support the following research priorities:
- – Marten monitoring
- – Fish monitoring at Théodat Lake
- – Willow tree planting for wildlife habitat restoration
- – Costal vegetation in Canada geese stop-over sites
- – Microbiome of James Bay eelgrass
Further information on each of these priorities can be found on our website.
Applications are due by 5:00pm EDT on May 15th, 2024
