Description

Clinical Translation Research Award
The SCIRP CTRA is intended to support high-impact, new or emerging clinical research that
requires additional preliminary studies, such as feasibility, pilot or optimization, to prepare for
future larger-scale clinical trials or implementation. This funding mechanism has two objectives:
• Advance Clinical Translation: To accelerate the translation of current and emerging
techniques and interventions into clinical use, proposed research projects should address
specific barrier(s) to clinical success for the purpose of de-risking or informing the design of
future definitive clinical trials. Relevant research may address, but is not limited to:
○ Determination/identification of the most appropriate study population for future efficacy
trials
○ Evaluation/optimization of study/intervention parameters
○ Refinement of trial design for acceptance and scalability
• Inform Decision-Making: Proposed research should identify the most effective diagnosis,
treatment and rehabilitation options to support critical decision-making for patients,
clinicians, care partners and policymakers.

Clinical Trial Award
The SCIRP Clinical Trial Award mechanism supports the rapid execution and analysis of clinical
trials with the potential to have a significant impact on the treatment or management of SCI.
Clinical trials may be designed to evaluate promising new products, pharmacologic agents
(drugs, biologics or medical devices), clinical guidance, and/or emerging approaches and
technologies. Proposed projects may range from small proof-of-concept trials (i.e., pilot, first-inhuman, phase 0) to demonstrate the feasibility or inform the design of more advanced trials
through large-scale trials to determine efficacy in relevant patient populations.

Investigator-Initiated Research Award
The SCIRP IIRA is intended to support studies that have the potential to make an important
contribution to SCI research, patient care, and/or quality of life. IIRA applications may focus on any phase of research from basic through translational, though studies focused exclusively on target identification are discouraged. Permitted research includes preclinical studies in animal models, research with human subjects or human anatomical substances, as well as ancillary studies associated with an existing clinical trial.

Translational Research Award
The SCIRP TRA is intended to support translational research that will accelerate the movement
of promising ideas into clinical applications for the SCI community. This funding opportunity
supports a range of studies, including preclinical evaluation of interventions and clinical studies
involving human subjects, tissues or data. The TRA also supports projects that optimize future
trial designs, ancillary studies for existing clinical trials and research that leverages clinical
observations to refine preclinical evaluation.
