The Vision Research Program (VRP) was established by Congress in 2009 to “target the various causes, effects and treatment of vision injury” as related to military exposure. The VRP was administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command’s Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center from fiscal year 2009 (FY09) to FY12 and was transitioned to the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) for administration starting with the FY13 program cycle. The VRP challenges the scientific community to design innovative research that will significantly advance the understanding, prevention, diagnosis, mitigation, and/or treatment of eye injury or visual dysfunction associated with military exposure and research that will enable the delivery of care in the military operational environment.
