Description

CIHR is part of an international consortium (GENDER-NET Plus), which will support research that explores the importance of sex and gender in health. GENDER-NET Plus will take the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a point of departure for the topics of this call.

The National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is pleased to also announce that it will make funding available to support Canadian researcher interested in investigating the aspects of social sciences and humanities, provided that the main focus remains within the natural sciences and engineering. The call for proposals was launched on December 21, 2017.

Requirements

Interested Canadian applicants will be required to:
• Apply individually through CIHR ResearchNet
• Be part of a European Commission application with at least two European research partners, each from a different partnering country (list below)

Funds available

The total amount available for Canadian researchers from CIHR is $1.5 million CAD, enough to fund five (5) grants. The maximum amount available is $100,000 CAD per year for up to three (3) years for a total of $300,000 CAD, per grant.
Note: Canadian researchers are not eligible for EU top-ups.

NSERC will provide direct funding to eligible Canadian researchers to participate in
awarded projects in the natural sciences and engineering related to SDG9 and SDG13
call topics only. The total amount available to Canadian researchers from NSERC is
$700,000 CAD, enough to fund at least two projects. The maximum amount available
per project is $100,000 CAD per year for up to three years, for a total of up to $300,000
CAD. The duration of a project must be two to three years.

About the opportunity

GENDER-NET Plus is part of the European Research Area Network (ERA-NET) Cofund, one of whose aims is to foster the integration of sex- and gender-based analysis (SGBA) into research and funding programs.

CIHR’s participation in GENDER-NET Plus is part of the Personalized Health Initiative, a priority-driven initiative funded through the CIHR Roadmap Accelerator Fund. One of the objectives of the Personalized Health Initiative is increasing researcher awareness about the importance of SGBA. 

CIHR is interested in supporting applications that explore the importance of sex and gender in health and gender, sex and aging in diagnosis and treatment.
