The CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative with strategic leadership from the Institute of Infection and Immunity (III) in collaboration with the Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA), CIHR Institute of Aging (IA), Institute of Gender and Health (IGH) and Institute of Aboriginal Peoples’ Health (IAPH) have launched the HIV/AIDS Comorbidity Prevention and Healthy Living Team Grant funding opportunity.
This funding opportunity aims to address the CIHR HIV/AIDS research priority of biomedical and clinical research. The goal of the HIV/AIDS Comorbidities Prevention and Healthy Living Team Grants is to improve the health of people living with HIV/AIDS in Canada by supporting the development or enhancement of expert teams of investigators and their partners undertaking strategic collaborative, multi-disciplinary biomedical and clinical research relevant to the CIHR HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan.
Research Areas
The relevant research areas for this funding opportunity are:
- HIV and Aging
- research on HIV immune modulation and its pathogenic mechanisms and their impact on the aging process and associated comorbidities
- research on HIV antiretroviral therapy mechanisms and their impact on the aging process and resulting comorbidities
- clinical research on aging in people living with HIV/AIDS
- HIV, Mental Health and Neurological Conditions
- pathophysiologic mechanisms of HIV-induced CNS dysfunction in the setting of long-term antiretroviral therapy and viral suppression
- research on immune modulation and associated mental health and neurological conditions
- approaches to identify and validate viral and host factors that influence the pathophysiology and manifestations of HIV-induced CNS dysfunction
- potential strategies to prevent or treat HIV/CNS disease
- address the impact of neurological comorbidities in people living with HIV/AIDS
- clinical research related to mental health and HIV, including behavioral and cognitive challenges associated to living with HIV.
- Co-morbidities associated with HCV or other Sexually Transmitted and Blood-borne Infections (STBBIs) in people living with HIV/AIDS:
- Potential biomedical and clinical strategies to manage co-existence of HIV and STBBIs
- Research on the impact of STBBIs on those living with HIV.
Note: Research may include domestic and international aspects. However, the focus of the project must be on the disease/condition within the context of HIV/AIDS in Canada.
Note that other biomedical and clinical research challenges exist in the area of mucosal immunology, therapeutic vaccine and Cure research which will be the focus of a second team grant funding opportunity in early 2018.
Funds available
The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $12,750,000, enough to fund approximately 5 grants. This amount may increase if additional funding partners participate. The maximum amount per grant is $500,000 per year for up to five years for a total of $2,500,000, per grant.
Developmental grants of up to $25,000 per grant may be offered, if requested, to successful applications at the Letter of Intent stage. The total amount available at the LOI stage is $250,000.
