Description

This RFP’s purpose is to produce research designed to make key recommendations on how to change government structures to better support Indigenous economic development. The research is to provide baseline data on Indigenous governance structures in the Atlantic and examine how those structures can be improved to increase economic development opportunities. In particular, using nation-building approaches. A tool kit will be developed to enable and support the development of culturally appropriate governance models that will increase economic prosperity in Atlantic Indigenous communities. The researcher will be working with an advisory committee in overseeing/guiding the work.
A 2010 study (Baseline Data for Aboriginal Economic Development: Informed Approach for Measuring Progress and Success) recognized that Indigenous community economic development is rooted in community-based decision making and participation and takes a holistic approach to development. Indigenous development is rooted in opportunities that meet distinct communities’ needs in distinct geographical and cultural settings. It differs from the prevailing model for economic development influenced by globalization (which envisions a homogenous national or global economy). Indigenous economic research in the Atlantic is crucial to better support communities moving forward.
