Description

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) offers IP Clinics Program grants to encourage the establishment or enhancement of IP clinics within Canadian universities. The grants under the program aim to support the provision of free or low cost IP services to businesses, and increase the exposure of university students to IP issues.

As you may know, Budget 2022 announced the expansion of the IP Clinics Program in order to make it easier to access basic IP services. As part of this expansion, an increased amount of $350 000 is available this year in grants, and the list of eligible recipients is being expanded to include Canadian business schools in addition to law schools. Accordingly, the program has been renamed the “IP Clinics Program”.

Again this year, we encourage applicants to consider proposals or activities that develop scalable tools and resources that can be sustainably delivered after funding has been fully used. We also encourage projects that support the participation and needs of underrepresented groups in IP. Finally, we encourage collaboration between law and business schools within the same university or collaboration between different universities across Canada.

If you would like more information on what types of activities and expenditures are eligible for funding under the Program, I encourage you to visit the Program web page. On this page, you will find the Program Guide that has been developed to assist with the application process. It includes information about how to apply, selection criteria and available funding. In order to be eligible for funding, your law school must be provincially accredited.

Those who are eligible and interested in applying for 2023-24 funding are invited to submit their application either directly via the Program web page or by completing an Application Form found on the Program web page and emailing the completed Form to ic.ipstrategy-strategieenmatieredepi.ic@canada.ca by August 21, 2023.
