Description
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is seeking opportunities to advance the Canadian critical minerals industry by collaborating on research and development projects that are aligned with industry needs and supported by Canada’s federal research capabilities.
A new call for Industry Expression of Interest (EOI) for Federal Science R&D will provide in-kind support for research and development projects at Canada’s federal laboratories. This call will be open until December 18th, 2023.
About the program
Canada’s federal laboratories are providing research and development (R&D) support, under the Critical Minerals Research, Development & Demonstration (CMRDD) program, focussing on upstream and midstream projects. The purpose of this program is to support projects at low to mid Technology Readiness Levels (TRL 2-5) with the capacity to make significant positive impacts on the critical minerals industry in Canada and to help propel them into the pilot and demonstration (pre-commercialization) phase of development.
To ensure relevancy and alignment between industry needs and federal R&D, we invite industry and academia to propose collaborative R&D projects that will address specific technical processing challenges in the development of critical minerals.
About this expression of interest
As this is an Expression of Interest, if the R&D project is selected, we may work with proponents to refine the proposals. A collaboration agreement between the proponent and the federal laboratory will subsequently be developed. The program may not be able to accept all proposed R&D projects.
Support available: in-kind federal R&D support (no direct funding will be provided)

Program timeframe: April 2024 – March 2027
