Memorial Deadline:

External Deadline: Thursday 11th, April 2019

Description

The Ocean Frontier Institute has announced a call for research proposals for Phase 2 of its funding. The proposals require that faculty work in teams to address two research themes:  The North Atlantic as a Climate Ocean and Coastal Communities and the Ocean. To facilitate establishing teams for this competition, Memorial University has established a working group to help connect researchers. The purpose of this team is not to filter proposals, limit participation, or even lead proposals, but instead is playing the role of matchmaker. There will be no internal vetting of Memorial applications being put forward for this opportunity by this group. The working group includes Dr. Uta Passow, Faculty of Science (uta.passow@mun.ca); Dr. Helen Zhang, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (bzhang@mun.ca); Heather O’Brien, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSSResearchAdmin@mun.ca); and Kelley Santos, Marine Institute (Kelley.Santos@mi.mun.ca). If you are not currently part of a team but are interested in participating, please send your name, contact information and expertise relevant to the research themes by Friday, March 29, at 5 p.m. We also ask faculty who are establishing a team to provide a brief description of the proposed research and the tentative team members to our working group, and indicate whether you are seeking additional expertise for your proposal as well as the nature of that expertise. The purpose of this latter request is to minimize overlapping proposals and duplication of effort.

RGCS Involvement

Research Grant and Contract Services is not required to sign off at the EOI stage of this funding opportunity. EOI submissions should go directly to Dalhousie University. Notify your Associate Dean (Research) and Department Head of your intention to submit an EOI to this competition.

If your EOI is selected to go forward to the full application stage, we request that you contact the applicable RGCS individual indicated below at least 10 working days prior to the application deadline.

Financial support to assist with application – OFI will provide up to C$10,000 for each consortium to use for planning workshops, with the amount awarded at the discretion of the scientific directorate, depending on the size and geographic reach of the consortium. Connect with RGCS should you receive funding to set up a research grant account.

Overview of Phase 2 Funding

Award

Compared to Phase 1, OFI’s next phase will support fewer projects but will allow for more resources per project. In Phase 2, OFI expects to fund two to five large projects — consortia representing academic, government, business, Indigenous and international researchers, Indigenous leaders and coastal community members.

OFI expects to fund consortia from a total envelope of about C$16 million, such that each research project should receive an average of approximately C$1 million per year for four years (all projects are expected to be completed in 2023). Please note: OFI expects successful applicants to leverage OFI’s investment with partner funds up to 1:1, with a target of 10% cash contributions in combined total from all partners across the project.

Eligibility

To qualify, each consortia research project must be led by a principal investigator (PI) who is a faculty or staff member at Dalhousie University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, or the University of Prince Edward Island.
