About the Network Environments for Indigenous Health Research (NEIHR) Program
This funding opportunity is part of the NEIHR Program. In 2019, CIHR funded nine (9) NEIHR Centres based in the following regions: Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. CIHR is now looking to extend the regional coverage of the NEIHR Program with the Yukon NEIHR Centre Operating Grant.
The focus of the NEIHR Program is to establish a national network of centres focused on Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) Peoples’ capacity development, research and Knowledge Sharing (KS). The NEIHR Centres are intended to provide supportive research environments for Indigenous health research driven by and grounded in Indigenous communities in Canada. Indigenous communities are broadly defined as individuals, groups, organizations, and populations (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) who live and work anywhere in Canada. The goal of the NEIHR Centres is to ensure continued Indigenous health research environment growth, broad regional development, and potential for international collaborations.
About the Yukon NEIHR Centre Operating Grant
The Yukon NEIHR Centre Operating Grant funding opportunity will encourage supportive research environments in Yukon for Indigenous health research driven by and grounded in Indigenous communities through its determined catchment area. The Yukon NEIHR Centre will be part of the network of centres established with the NEIHR Program and its common governance structure (i.e., NEIHR Council; supported by the NEIHR National Coordinating Centre). The Yukon NEIHR Centre Operating Grant will align with the grant term of the other NEIHR Centres.
The Yukon NEIHR Centre will grow overall awareness, and capacity to advance health research that is relevant to Indigenous Peoples’ cultures, values, and beliefs; and is, inclusive of active community members contributing to health research. It will also allow for the continued support of the Indigenous health research environment through the NEIHR Program.
In conjunction with the other NEIHR Centres, the Yukon NEIHR Centre will ensure that resources are distributed equitably and based on the needs and the demographics of the population (e.g., First Nations, Inuit and/or Métis) in its catchment area.
The Yukon NEIHR Centre will be expected to coordinate with Indigenous communities and researchers, knowledge users and other interested parties to support the interconnective and collaborative Indigenous-led NEIHR Program across Canada. The Yukon NEIHR Centre is encouraged to reach out to previously funded Indigenous health researchers to make connections as networking is an integral part of the network of centres and where there could be an opportunity to foster potential information exchanges.
In addition, within the network of centres, the Yukon NEIHR Centre will:
- Support and develop research capacity for Indigenous health research trainees (including both Indigenous and non-Indigenous).
- Contribute to the critical appraisal of the appropriate application of the Tri-Council Policy Statement 2 (TCPS 2 [2022]) to research and any revisions to the Policy;
- Work to recruit university research ethics board (REBs) members who are qualified in the area of Indigenous health research;
- Help educate university REBs in the areas of Indigenous research ethics, Indigenous community relationships and Indigenous health research; and
- Facilitate the establishment of community REBs in local Indigenous communities and within Indigenous organizations.
Along with the other NEIHR Centres, the Yukon NEIHR Centre will continue building on the foundation towards developing a sustainability plan for long-term Indigenous community engagement and institutional commitments to confirm additional financial support so that the NEIHR Centres do not completely rely on CIHR funding.
