Description
The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is pleased to announce a funding opportunity for the Canadian space science community to pursue research and development activities in priority areas of the High-altitude Aerosols, Water vapour and Clouds (HAWC) mission.
HAWC is a Canadian-led mission that will fill the gaps in information needed for near-term predictions of weather, air pollutants/aerosols and surface hydrology, and in long-term climate projections.
With this Announcement of Opportunity (AO), the CSA solicits proposals for projects that will contribute to the following objectives:
- Advance primary HAWC science objectives;
- Advance applications enabled by HAWC for a healthy and climate-resilient Canada.
Through this AO, the CSA seeks to:
- – Advance HAWC science and applications through research, development, and the integration of atmospheric observations, modelling, and advanced analytics, including artificial intelligence;
- – Increase Canadian participation and leadership in the HAWC initiative, strengthening national expertise and collaboration in Earth observation, atmospheric monitoring, and climate research;
- – Enhance Earth system modelling capacity and the use of CSA-supported data, including improving the integration, accessibility, and operational use of atmospheric and environmental datasets;
- – Develop applications that strengthen civil preparedness, resilience, and critical infrastructure protection, including capabilities for anticipating, responding to, and recovering from environmental disruptions, with potential applicability across civilian and/or security contexts;
- – Improve environmental intelligence and situational awareness in northern, remote, and Arctic regions, aligning with Government of Canada and allied priorities, including monitoring extreme events, air quality variability, and evolving environmental conditions affecting communities, ecosystems, and infrastructure.
