Description

MBR Space Settlement Challenge is open for proposals from all areas of research that explore bold ideas, suggest radical solutions, and develop new business models for living and working in space, on the Moon, on Mars, and beyond.

MBR Space Settlement Challenge offers seed grants up to 16 000 USD for a maximum period of 6 months to pursue projects on the topics listed below. The total available fund is 540 000 USD.

Topics

Proposed research project must cover at least one of the suggested topics but can also extend over several if relevant: Space Settlements; Terraforming and Space Ecology; Economics and Business models; Governance and Legislative Issues

The outline research proposal consists of the followings questions/topics:

– Project summary

– What is already known about the subject?

– What is the potential impact of your project?

– What do you need to find out?

– How will you execute your project or research?

– Estimated cost of the project

  We expect a proposal outline of no more than 2 pages 

Important dates

April 10, 2018 – Proposal submission deadline

May 10, 2018 – Announcement of winners

Grant period is up to 6 months

Allowable costs

The support includes all relevant and justified research costs (such as support for postdoctoral fellows and student researchers, costs of collaboration, travel, equipment, publications, materials, and consumables) as well as indirect costs (institutional overhead).

All costs should be directly related to conducting your research and accomplishing proposal objectives.

Maximum allowable budget is 16 000 USD.

Eligibility

Open to researchers with a PhD degree (or equivalent) or early career researchers enrolled in a Ph.D. study. Applicants are welcome from any nationality, institution or location

Evaluation and selection

Proposals that get funded are selected in a two phase evaluation process where applicants are also the reviewers. In the first phase all applicants are required to review 3 other proposals submitted to the call. Proposals are evaluated through numerical scoring and written feedback using pre-determined evaluation criteria. A ranking of all proposals is formed based on the combined score of 3 evaluations. Proposals are then divided into 3 groups with different roles.
