Understanding the Health Impact of Inactivity – Application

Well-being, Health and Biomedical Discovery

Deadlines

Academic Unit: Inquire with Unit

Memorial Deadline: Thursday 16th, August 2018

External Deadline: Tuesday 21st, August 2018

Description

The Understanding the Health Impact of Inactivity funding opportunity is the first component under the CIHR Transitions in Care Initiative (link to come), aimed at improving the health and wellness of Canadians by supporting research that informs the health system to optimize the outcomes of patients experiencing transitions in care.

The present funding opportunity is to support an inactivity study including a countermeasure intervention study involving older adults (55-65) for which all basic infrastructure costs, including standardized measurements on participants (such as described in the Guidelines for Standardization of Bed Rest Studies in the Spaceflight Context [ PDF (5.3 MB) – external link ]), a medical team, and surveillance on site (at a specific bed rest facility), will be covered by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). The successful applicants’ research projects will run in parallel and will all be integrated into an overall coordinated protocol. A planning workshop will be held in January or February 2019 (date to be confirmed) in order to coordinate the protocols.

Please see the “Additional Information” Section for the parameters for the studies.

Funds Available

CIHR and partner(s) financial contributions for this initiative are subject to availability of funds. Should CIHR or partner(s) funding levels not be available or are decreased due to unforeseen circumstances, CIHR and partner(s) reserve the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to grants received as a result of this funding opportunity.

  • – The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $1,600,000, enough to fund approximately 8 grants. The maximum amount per grant is $200,000 for up to 18 months. Eighteen months is the time allotted for the teams to prepare their study and coordinate with the bed rest facility experts, to initiate and terminate their data collection during the bed rest paradigm, and to analyze their data and prepare reports.
  • – Of this $1,600,000:
    1. $400,000 is available to fund 2 grants aligned with the ICRH mandate and include considerations of biological measures that could be used to inform care transitions of individuals experiencing inactivity – or reduced activity – resulting from a sedentary lifestyle, injury, acute or chronic health condition, hospitalization, type of care setting (e.g., critical care, long-term care, home care) and/or during physical rehabilitation.
    2. $200,000 is available to fund 1 grant for research aligned with the IMHA mandate with specific interest in the area of bone and/or muscle health.
    3. $200,000 is available to fund 1 grant for research aligned with CFN to improve care for older Canadians living with frailty. CFN will specifically fund a study investigating (measuring) biological markers (i.e., biomarkers) believed to be associated with increased risk of or development of frailty and/or which may be responsive to the bed rest countermeasures or rehabilitation.
    4. $800,000 is available from IA to fund 4 grants for research on any topic, excluding the three topics specified above.

Additional program details are available on CIHR’s website.
