NOTE: Deadlines will vary by individual calls; please reach out to RIS as soon as possible with your call information to determine its RIS deadline. As Horizon Europe applications typically require more institutional input than Tri-Agency applications, please reach out to RIS and your academic unit as soon as possible during the development process.
Researchers interested in applying to Horizon Europe are strongly encouraged to contact Drs. Jennifer Stevens (v5js@mun.ca) and/or Amanda Crompton (ajcrompt@mun.ca), as well as their unit’s grants facilitation officer(s), early on to discuss the application process.
Horizon Europe is the European Union’s (EU) biggest research and innovation program with a budget of €95.5 billion running from 2021 to 2027.
Canada is now an “associated country” under Horizon Europe’s Pillar 2 – which means Canadian researchers and organizations can participate in Pillar 2 Horizon Europe funding calls as if they were European. This includes access to funding for collaborative research and innovation projects, and the ability to lead consortia. However, it’s important to note that there are some specific calls that are reserved for EU only, so careful review of the call documentation in advance is always necessary.
Key things Canadian researchers should know:
– Work programmes: Each year, the EU publishes “work programmes” detailing specific funding calls (topics) within each pillar. These are released in advance, so you can plan your proposals. – Open and upcoming calls for proposals can be found on the EU Funding & Tenders Portal. (https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/home)
– Consortia: Most projects require a consortium – a partnership of researchers from different countries and organizations.
– Funding: Horizon Europe typically covers a significant portion of project costs (usually around 20-100 per cent, depending on the type of action).
